The Atlas Cedar: The Tree Connecting Perfume to Morocco

The Atlas cedar is an emblematic tree in Morocco.

In the mountains, at several hundred meters in altitude, the forests of Cedrus atlantica shape a unique landscape. The trunk of the cedar can reach several dozen meters, and its wide, majestic silhouette dominates the surrounding vegetation. The tree can live for several centuries.

What does cedar smell like?

In perfumery, cedar naturally belongs to the woody note family. It stands out for its singular dryness and brings depth and definition to compositions. One can perceive a clean, almost mineral quality to it, as well as a slightly camphorated freshness.

When paired with citrus fruits, it extends their freshness while bringing them depth. In contact with spices, it complements their warmth while maintaining the dry facet that characterizes it. In a floral composition, it creates a subtle contrast between the softness of the flowers and the bolder presence of the wood. It can be highly prominent or more discreet, stay in the background or become a true signature. It all depends on how the perfumer chooses to work with it.

The Atlas Cedar: The Common Thread of My Perfumes

Several houses use Atlas cedar in their compositions, such as Amouage's Crimson Rocks or Terre d'Hermès. Others even dedicate entire perfumes to it, like Atelier Cologne's Cèdre Atlas or Première Note's Cedar Atlas.
For me, it is always present in all of my creations. It holds a special place in my life, as it echoes my Moroccan origins and my childhood.

It takes on very different expressions depending on the materials it is paired with.

For example, in J’ai Fait Un Rêve Obscur, Atlas cedar appears alongside saffron, cashmere wood, and oud. Its presence extends a composition where bergamot and pink pepper meet Egyptian jasmine and Madagascar vanilla.

In Mon Nom est Rouge, the cedar accompanies a completely different world. Rose meets cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, and cumin before giving way to a base where white wood, guaiac wood, papyrus, incense, leather, and Atlas cedar blend together. The woody material then supports the richness of the spices and the rose.

With Mudéjar, the cedar participates in yet another story. Inspired by Mudéjar architecture, the perfume evokes its lines and textures. Atlas cedar accompanies black pepper and grapefruit at the heart of a composition that evolves toward oakmoss, incense, leather, and sandalwood. This structure helps give the perfume its mineral character, like an echo of the stone surfaces and architecture that inspired its creation.

From one creation to another, the expression of Atlas cedar is unique to each composition. But it is always present: it is part of my olfactory signature.
